January MEETING NEWS: The March clock and watch contests brought 14 entries to the display table. The theme for the clock contest was pieces with a military theme, and the watch contest was for pieces that were made before 1870. In the clock contest, Dave Hanna placed first with an eight-day Dent chronometer from 1895. The clock came from a Japanese ship, has an unusual balance, an up-and-down indicator and keeps excellent time. Coming in second was Jack Fessler's 1941 Hamilton 21 from World War II, a gift from Fessler's son. The clock likely has a replacement case and has a key that is fixed so it rachets. In third place was Joe Latham's "Boiler Room" Seth Thomas clock with a No. 10 movement. Latham obtained the clock, which keeps good time, in Ohio. In the watch contest, Joe Jones placed first with an 1867 Elgin B.W. Raymond. The watch was the 594th made in the first run of B.W. Raymonds. Ron Emrick placed second with his 1869 18-size, 15-jewel Elgin W.H. Ferry with key wind and key set. The case - perhaps coin silver - included a trademark of two fish facing each other with no hallmarks on it. Con Keller came in third with an 1852 Rockford that runs well and is key wind, key set.
