JANUARY 2001 MEETING NEWS The clock and watch contests brought 15 entrants to the display table. The clock contest category was for "Best Mantel Clock," and Jim Baxter won first place with a fine example of a double-dial Perpetual Calendar Ithaca clock. Second place went to Les Wise for a Empire model John Birg original 1848 Chrystal Palace clock. Ken Edmundson captured third place with a Seth Thomas violin-shaped clock, circa 1890, with authentic violin strings in place. Dave Hanna, Dennis Fox and Jack Fessler also entered clocks that would have enthused any clock collector. The "More Consonants than Vowels (in the name)" category had seven contestants. John Cote took first place with a 21-jewel grade 805 Rockford - marked RG on the movement - in a beautiful Hunter Case. Tom Hess captured second place with a 1933 World's Fair watch in its original box and shipping box. The box also still contained the original one-year replacement guarantee. The guarantee stated that repairs would be done in two days and cost 25 cents, plus 5 cents for shipping and handling. Joe Jones took third place with a fine example of an Elgin Grade 4, third model, 16S, 15-jewel in a nice Keystone 20-year case. Joe commented that Elgin was experimenting with a few different 16S models at the same time, with none of them being very successful. The pictures taken with a digital camera were displayed using the clubs new Computerized projection system. Philip Heilman correctly identified the "Mystery Watch" as a Hampden made in Springfield, MA.
